Parkdale Market
Location: Location: Hintonburg Neighbourhood, Ottawa ON. / Completed 2010
Client: Parsons, (formerly Delcan Corporation) / City of Ottawa
Established in 1924, Parkdale Market is Ottawa’s second oldest outdoor market in the thriving Hintonburg neighbourhood. It is adjacent to Parkdale Park and serves as a significant hub for civil and social life in Hintonburg. Redevelopment of the Market galvanized Ottawa Markets’ mission “to maximize the Markets potential to be unique year-round places and destinations to purchase local produce and goods as well as other services and products that meet the needs of the local and city-wide residents and tourists.”
Public consultation, urban design analysis and redevelopment proposals ensured consistency with the community’s art oriented and progressive urban fabric composed of commercial and residential properties. Redevelopment concepts evolved into tangible improvements to the Market including new reorganized vehicular, vendor and pedestrian surfacing, visual and pedestrian linkages to Wellington Street West and Parkdale Park, enhanced pedestrian and parking lot lighting, new signage, banners and decorative elements such as metal perimeter fencing, entrance bollards, planting of flower beds, shrubs and street trees.
